Trilateral Research, a London-based enterprise, specialising in research and the provision of strategic, policy and regulatory advice on new technologies, is seeking to engage one or more Research Analysts. The candidate should have a sound understanding of ethical issues arising from development, deployment and use of new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, algorithmic decision-making, blockchain technologies, the Internet of Things, augmented and virtual reality, etc.

The post-holder will be expected to liaise with project partners and stakeholders across the EU and internationally and to deliver high quality research and project outputs in a collaborative and supportive research-intensive environment.


Specific job responsibilities include:

  • Identifying and analysing ethical issues
  • Ethical impact assessments
  • Foresight practices, including spotting weak signals and constructing and deconstructing ethical dilemma scenarios
  • Identifying relevant stakehoders in EU Member States and creating a contact list
  • Designing questionnaires
  • Co-ordinating and participating in focus groups held in selected Member States involving representatives from government, industry, professions, civil society organisations
  • Analysing and sharing best practices
  • Contributing to the development of risk assessments
  • Writing reports and developing other deliverables as required to fulfil contractual obligations
  • Researching and writing content for grant proposals and tender submissions
  • Writing content for peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, as part of projects, or as an outgrowth from projects
  • Attending and/or presenting at conferences and workshops, involving occasional travel in Europe.

Qualifications and Skills

The ideal candidate will have

  • a PhD in ethics
  • proven post-doctoral experience in doing case studies
  • good interpersonal skills
  • strong, demonstrable writing skills and preferably will have already published papers in peer-reviewed journals
  • a sound understanding of ethical issues arising from emerging technologies, especially in predictive policing or intelligence-led policing, the dark web, tax crimes, social media, etc.
  • The candidate should be based in the UK, Ireland or Europe.
  • The candidate should be able to start on 1 May 2018.
